GUEST SPEAKER HM2 (FMF) JOSHUA T. CHIARINI (USN Ret.)

HM2(FMF) Joshua T. Chiarini (USN Ret.) is a Rhode Island native who enlisted in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in September 2000. He is a decorated combat veteran and a nationally recognized instructor in tactical medicine and emergency response. His military awards include the Silver Star, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (Valor), Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medal. He is a veteran of three combat tours in Iraq, where he served with USMC infantry units in the Al Anbar province—later known as the Sunni Triangle of Death—and was also deployed to Guantanamo Bay’s “Camp X-Ray,” providing care for high-risk detainees.

In 2006, he served as a Platoon Corpsman, 1st Platoon, Battery G, Battalion Landing Team 1/2, Twenty-Second Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, in the Al Anbar Province, Iraq. While conducting a combat patrol, 3d Squad was attacked by two improvised explosive devices followed by heavy small arms and machine gun fire that wounded five Marines and one interpreter. Witnessing the initial attack and seeing that the road ahead was blocked by disabled vehicles, Petty Officer Chiarini immediately left the relative safety of his vehicle and fought his way across one hundred meters of fire-swept terrain to reach the casualties. He then used his own body to shield the wounded from the increasingly high volume of incoming rounds as he moved them to cover. Realizing that most of the wounded needed to be evacuated, he placed himself between the casualty and the enemy fire, assisting the casualty with one arm while providing suppressive fire on the enemy with his rifle in the other. He then fought his way back across the one hundred meters of fire-swept terrain to the casualty collection point. He repeated this action three times until each casualty was stabilized and safely loaded for evacuation.

Due to his heroic efforts, Chiarini was featured in CNN’s Heroes documentary and his actions under fire are detailed in Allan Zullo’s book “War Heroes: Voices from Iraq”. He later attended the military’s TCCC Instructor Course and numerous other tactical medical programs, where he developed a passion for teaching.

After retiring from Naval Health Clinic New England in 2008, Chiarini joined the North Providence Fire Department where he has served for the past fourteen years as a firefighter and EMT-Cardiac. He also now serves as the Director of Military and Tactical Programs at the Training Innovation Leadership Institute (TILI), where he leads curriculum development and scenario-based instruction in Rescue Task Force operations, Active Shooter Response, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care (TECC), and TCCC. His team trains first responders, police, fire, and military personnel using real-world experience and high-fidelity simulations.

He is honored to serve as this year’s guest speaker at the inaugural Red and Blue Backup Classic!
